Hidden Traps of Buying Magnets

Buyer's Alerts:

Five Secrets and Scams That Magnet Vendors Don't Want You To Know!

Of course, we'd prefer that you buy your magnet from us, but even if you don't, it's important to us that you know all the facts before you buy. So, when shopping around for magnets, be sure to look out for the following tricks and traps. They are designed to deceive you into over-paying for a low-quality, inferior magnet.

A Thicker Magnet is NOT Stronger

Don't be fooled by companies who advertise a thicker magnet. Thicker does not mean stronger. In fact, a thick magnet may actually be weaker than a thin magnet! So strength, not thickness, is the true measure of a magnet's quality. Believe it or not, some companies have even been known to add thick paper onto to a weak magnet in order to make it feel bulky.

Why is this so important? Because inferior magnets can actually do more harm than good when it comes to your company's image. Look at it this way: would you rather your magnet be that prized "go-to" magnet when your customers want to hold up that special picture or report card on their fridge? Or would you rather your magnet be the one that falls on the floor (and eventually into the trash) every time the fridge door is opened or closed?

At Magnets.com, we use only the highest quality materials available! Each Magnets.com magnet will hold between 5-7 sheets of paper on your fridge (that's a whopping 5 Times stronger than nearly all magnets you'll see advertised on the Internet -- which are lucky to hold one sheet of paper, if any.)

Look out for hidden charges when shopping for magnets!

In order to drive down their advertised prices, many companies will leave out certain basic services or features that are vital to designing a high-quality magnet. Some companies, for example, will charge extra for each color you use. Others will charge you to scan a photo, or to add a high-gloss coating. These companies will then "tack on" those charges at the end of your order process.

Why is this so important? Simple: Your low-cost magnets that once seemed like a "bargain" could turn out to be more expensive than you were originally quoted. By then, you've also wasted precious time and effort on emails, phone calls, etc. Who needs that kind of hassle?

When you order your magnet from magnets.com, you can rest assured that you'll never be charged for things like extra colors, bleeds, scans or premium coatings. It's all included in our guaranteed lowest prices, so the price you're quoted is the price you'll pay. Period.

Beware of Inferior Printing Quality:

Another way that magnet companies cut costs is to use low-quality printing technologies. Some of the more common methods include Screen Printing, Digital Press, even DesktopLaser or Inkjet printers (That's right - the same type of low-resolution inkjets that you've probably used to print recipes at home!).

Why is this so important? By cutting corners in the printing quality, your magnet could turn out dull, blurry or grainy. (Do you want your company image to seem dull, blurry or grainy?) Believe it or not, people can be picky about the magnets they put on their fridge -- and a better-quality magnet has a better chance of being kept!

Avoid Poor Laminations, Materials and Coatings!

Some companies print their magnets without any type of protective coating. They just glue a paper printout (or even worse, a business card) onto weak magnetic material and call it a magnet. Other companies can use a thin "varnish coat" or an adhesive cover-sheet, and try to pass it off as a laminated finish.

Why is this so important? Cheap coatings are an inexpensive way to make a magnet look shiny, but have a tendency to wear off easily -- which may cause your magnets to look weathered, cheap, or unprofessional. Other low-cost methods can make the magnet warp with age or heat, or even cause your magnet to actually peel the white coating off a refrigerator! (an effective way to upset your customers!)

At Magnets.com, we use a durable, long-lasting cellosheen coating on each and every magnet we produce. Non-toxic and tough as nails, this coating is designed to last for years (heck, it may even outlast some refrigerators!)

Check out the Company Itself!

Finally, here are 3 questions you should ask about any magnet company you plan to do business with:

  • Are they experts in magnet manufacturing, or are they just a "middleman" company that dabbles in magnets? (Hint: look at the company's name or website address for a clue.)
  • Do they have a database of satisfied, well-known customers, or just a list of anonymous "testimonials" that could have been written by anyone?
  • Will they actually follow through on your order, of just skip town with your money? Do they follow an ethical code of conduct and business practices? Do they have an actual phone number that dials through to an actual live person? (for example: 866-229-8237). Or do they try to hide their phone number so that you can't call them when your magnets arrive in poor condition?

(OK, that's more than three questions. But these are all important things to look out for.)

Remember: There is NO substitute for a strong, high-quality magnet.
